Gebb's Prince

Gebb's Prince
15.3 Hand Bay Gelding
Foal of 1996

Gebb (who's name is pronounced "Jeb") has been a family member for the last three years.  He came to us from our friends Stacy and Ron, and had had the terrible misfortune of being neglected during the few months he was not in their care before coming to us.  His "babysitter" had promised them that he would have all the dailies--feed, water, shelter, hay...  and when they went to pick him up, not only did he have no feed and no hay, he had no shelter and was "drinking" snow for water.  Stacy called me in tears--he was one of their best blue collar runners and she just couldn't believe what had happend to this loyal, hard-knocking horse.  We brought him down with us and with lots of love and TLC, our starving ugly duckling turned back into the beautiful swan that he had been when he was racing.

Gebb's racing career spanned from 1999 to 2006.  He retired sound after seventy-seven races of which he won ten, and placed on the board another eighteen times.  His earnings were just shy of $130,000.  Though his name is Gebb's Prince, Stacy always calls him "Gebb's Best" because he was such a hard worker and the best foal of the many that she raced who share his dam.  He retired in 2004 and 2005 before finally really retiring in 2006.

Gebb has been David's trail horse and a lesson horse in my program since shortly after he came down to us and was on the road to recovery.  He also became the best friend of one of my students, Taylor, during her senior year of high school.  We hoped that he would be able to go to college with her, but the unknowns of the first year away from home made us all decide that the best thing for him was to stay at the farm with us.  Gebb has been shown on the flat and over fences up to 2'3.  He enjoys showing, tolerates schooling in the ring, and has given his heart to trail riding.  He loves water, crosses bridges, leads or follows, doesn't worry about deer or traffic, and has come along way across the miles that he and David have travelled together.

Since we've taken over the farm full time, our trail riding has dwindled down to almost nothing.  Gebb spends his days enjoying his fan and his favorite cribbing spot on his wall (and of course his hay, too), and spends his afternoons out with the bachelors hanging around and sunbathing.  He is a unique horse, and one who loves to have a job.  Though he's not unhappy with his present life, I know for sure that being busy makes him happiest--after all, it only took three years to convince him he really could retire!
