Tanner is now back in work and ready for interviews!  He's working well and happy to have a job again.  He had the (dis)pleasure of over six weeks of stall and small paddock confinement while he healed from a kick to his knee--it wasn't a nasty injury in and of itself, but one that was in a bad place due to the high motion of the area.  All that he has to show for his adventures is a little bit of scar tissue that's already diminishing from where the staples were--nothing like putting Humpty Dumpty back together again!!

He's had two rides since his return to work, and though he was initially a bit excited about being back under saddle , is pretty much our same old Tanner--he's willing and capable, and LOVES having a job.  He's happy to do anything that's asked of him, and eager to please his rider.  He's his same old uncomplicated self, and continues to suit riders of many different levels.

He's a fantastic young horse with oodles of athletic ability--that famous father of his (Smart Strike) stamps a lot of his kids with his handsome good looks and athleticism--Tanner may not have had what it takes to be a stand out race horse, but he has all the heart and ability to become the very best at any new discipline he's pointed towards, and his daddy's striking build to go right along with it!!

Tanner is wrapping up the last of several weeks of lay-up time due to a minor pasture injury.  He's enjoying some private turnout time and a little extra attention, but is busting at the seams to go back to work.

We plan on putting him back into the program within the next week to ten days, and are looking forward to working with him under saddle again.  He's easy and fun to work with, and is so uncomplicated that even young riders really enjoy him.

Tanner joined us from "The Truck" back in November, but was so thin and poor when he arrived, that we've held him as the best kept secret of 2011 here at A Pinch of Luck!

This amazing gelding is by the famed Lanes End, Kentucky sire Smart Strike who stands for a mere $85,000.  Tanner was born a Virginia blue-blood, trained to race by equally famous trainer Todd Pletcher, and never made the grade as a race horse.  He won his second start, a maiden claiming race, but his connections work with horses from the top end of racing's world, and he was just not going to be that.

Somehow, Tanner filtered out of racing and ended up nearly starving and on "The Truck."  Though the reason he left racing is clear, the reason he ended up as sadly as he did will probably never be known.

Fortunately for him though, he came to us, and he's been fully rehabbed, and has just started back into work.  The quality of his beginning is evident in his class--he'd done nothing but hang around and eat since his arrival, and we simply tacked him up and hopped on--and he never batted an eye.  This lovely gelding was a champ for his first ride:  he walked, trotted, and cantered in both directions, trotted ground poles and small fences, and even worked "no hands" for a few trips around the ring!

Tanner is going to be a wonderful mount for a young rider amateur looking for a nicely made, wonderfully tempered gelding with athleticism to share.  He's kind and sweet, loves attention, and is fabulous under saddle and on the ground.  He retired from his brief career with clean, sound legs, a great mind, and an attitude that's truly up for anything!

We plan on giving this furry beast a hair cut in the next week or so--check back for the "real Tanner" under his hair soon!! We'll add more pictures, then, too!!
